The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is looking for Visiting Researchers and Visiting Scholars (EU Law) to join its team. These remote-first 4-12 month positions offer PhD students, post-docs, lecturers, professors, and other academics the opportunity to work at the leading edge of AI, law, and policy, with a focus on EU law and the EU AI Act. We welcome applications from individuals with a current university affiliation.

As a general guideline, candidates with over a decade of experience— such as conducting relevant academic research, advising on technology policy, or drafting legislation—will be considered for the Visiting Scholar role. 

There are no deadline for these roles, and we will review applications on a rolling basis. We expect our first major review to take place between mid- and end-February.

NOTE: These are fixed-term roles. We also offer full-time, long-term (Senior) Research Scholar positions.

About LawAI

The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is an independent think tank that researches and advises on the legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence. We believe that sound legal analysis will promote security, welfare, and the rule of law. We conduct research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, law, and policy and advise governments, international organizations, public institutions, and private actors. About the roles

As a Visiting Researcher/Scholar (EU law), you will carry out research on EU law and the EU AI Act as part of our EU law team, gaining firsthand experience working in a mission-driven, ambitious research organization with intellectual freedom.  

Visiting Researcher/Scholars receive:

  • Direct engagement with senior decision-makers
  • Access to LawAI’s research infrastructure and network, including operational support such as editing and proofreading
  • Collaborative opportunities with our research staff and affiliates
  • Guidance in developing policy recommendations and frameworks
  • Potential secondments with LawAI’s global network of partners

These roles are remote-first and full-time, though we are open to considering part-time arrangements. Visiting Researcher/Scholars are eligible to receive compensation for their time with us, particularly if they do not receive funding from their home institution, with significant room for negotiation. If salary is a barrier to applying, let us know—we are happy to accommodate your needs.

About you

You might be a good fit for this work if you:

  • Have a demonstrated ability to produce excellent work, ideally aligned with LawAI’s Workstreams & Research Directions 
  • Are currently affiliated with a university in the EU
  • Have EU law training and/or experience
  • Articulate your views with clarity, strong reasoning, and transparency
  • Are committed to ensuring that advances in artificial intelligence are beneficial and safe for the public 
  • Ability to commit to remote-based work for at least 4 months

Application process

We welcome applicants who wish to begin work as soon as possible or up to nine months after applying. Applicants are encouraged to specify their preferred start date and duration based on their research objectives and availability.

An opportunity for us to learn more about your interests, values, and approach to the role.

Step 3: Research Interview (60 minutes)

Discuss your research interests, goals, and fit with a member of our staff. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask us questions.

Step 4: Decision
