About LawAI

The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is an independent think tank that researches and advises on the legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence. We believe that sound legal analysis will promote security, welfare, and the rule of law. We engage in three core activities: independent legal research and analysis; consulting for governments, academia, and industry; and field-building through fellowships and events.

We have grown from roughly 28 to 40 staff between 2025 and 2026 and plan to grow by 1.5x again in 2027.

Recent accomplishments include:

  • Our Director served in a legal advisory role to the European AI Office on the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice, and testified before the European Parliament. In the US, we briefed Congressional staff and state legislatures on AI regulation, and our memos on the proposed federal moratorium were widely circulated and reported on.
  • Recently we published several pieces of research, including Law-Following AI in the Fordham Law Review, Architectures of Global AI Governance with Oxford University Press, and the Cambridge Commentary on EU General-Purpose AI Law.
  • Nearly 5,000 people applied to our Summer Research Fellowship in 2025, seven times as many as the year before. Former fellows and scholars now work at the European AI Office, the UK AI Security Institute, leading AI labs, and in academia.
  • We brought together more than 200 participants and 50 experts, including Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, across our flagship events: the Summer Institute on Law and AI, the Cambridge Forum on Law and AI, and the Workshop on Law-Following AI.

Our research is split among three teams: US Law & Policy, EU Law, and Legal Frontiers. You can learn more about LawAI on our website, alongside our recent publications, our 2025 Annual Report and an overview of our workstreams and research directions.

What we value at LawAI

We put our mission first to realize our ambitious goals for impact, following our operating principles: rigorous and actionable in our work, curious and humble in how we think, and kind and clear in how we communicate.

About the role

Our legal questions have outgrown the way we handle them, and several programs we want to run are waiting on answers we can’t get quickly today. We want someone who can work through thorny and novel legal questions with leadership and help us decide what to pursue and how. You would be our first in-house lawyer, with substantial autonomy to shape the role and the legal function as we grow. The role could lean toward a broad General Counsel remit or toward the hardest strategic questions, depending on your strengths.

  • Own legal strategy and risk. Be a thought partner to leadership, weighing legal risk against mission. Scope initiatives before launch: exposure, likelihood, cost, and the structure that keeps the upside.
  • Answer thorny or novel questions fast. For example: Can our US team draft bill text at a legislator’s request without it counting toward our lobbying limits? Should a new program sit inside LawAI, under fiscal sponsorship, or as its own entity? If a funder wants us to commission law firms and professors to publish answers to open legal questions about AI safety, how do we keep it public analysis rather than legal advice, and who carries the liability?
  • Structure new programs and grants. Help design a planned grants program funding academics and new organizations, including teaching buyouts and open calls for proposals. Depending on your interests, the role could also expand into commissioning specialist legal research from law firms on important AI governance questions.
  • Structure and compliance. How our US, UK and EU entities relate and share costs, including the build-out of our UK entity; entity governance; 501(c)(3) lobbying compliance as our US team drafts legislation and advises legislators and agencies.
  • Contracts and people. Agreements for publications, research partnerships, law firms, events and fellowships, including authorship and IP licensing; employment, contractor and visa questions for staff and fellows employed through an employer of record (EOR).
  • Build the function. Templates, policies and rules of thumb so staff can handle routine questions themselves. Decide what stays in-house and what goes out, and get faster, better answers from the firms we use.

Who might be a good fit

An experienced lawyer with excellent judgment, strong drafting skills, and a record of driving work forward with little oversight. You form an independent view, explain risks in terms colleagues can weigh, recommend a way forward, and see decisions through. You handle sensitive matters with discretion and will take on work that isn’t strictly legal when it helps get something important done. You don’t need expertise in every area, or an AI policy background. US qualification is a plus given our 501(c)(3) work. There’s room to grow into building a legal team and owning risk management across LawAI.
