Seasonal Fellowships

Applicants for the US and EU Law tracks should have prior legal experience through study or work in those jurisdictions. We also encourage applications from individuals who have studied or practiced US and EU law, but are now based elsewhere.

For the Legal Frontiers track, most successful applicants will have a deep demonstrated understanding of the law and public policy of at least one of the jurisdictions most relevant to LawAI: the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. We will consider applicants without expertise in one of these jurisdictions only in exceptional cases.

We generally don’t consider applicants without formal law training or experience for the US and EU Law tracks, as they require a strong understanding of the legal principles applicable to AI regulation in the jurisdictions we focus on. To be considered, candidates should have formal training of some kind.

For the Legal Frontiers track, we welcome applicants without a primary background in law who are able to clearly articulate how their research can positively shape the development of law and public policy for advanced AI. We encourage those with backgrounds in computer science, public policy, economics, history, psychology, or physics to apply. Candidates who wish to perform technical research during the fellowship are responsible for finding their own qualified technical supervisor.

While candidates should have an interest in AI, law, and policy and be prepared to apply their research abilities and legal knowledge to questions in our field, prior experience or expertise in the domain is not required.

All Seasonal Fellowships include an in-person Convening Week. Outside of the Convening Week, the nature of participation varies by track:

• Summer Fellowship (US): We strongly encourage in-person participation in Washington DC, as much of the value of this fellowship comes from being embedded within the team and the broader DC policy community. That said, we recognize that circumstances vary, and we're open to considering remote arrangements on a case-by-case basis for candidates with compelling reasons to participate remotely (e.g., family commitments). The Convening Week is hosted in Washington, DC, June 21–25.
• Summer Research Fellowship (Legal Frontiers): The fellowship is remote-first. We offer opportunities for in-person participation at our office in Cambridge, UK, or in Washington, DC, with our US Law & Policy team. Past Summer Research Fellows have found it valuable to be embedded within the organization and broader research and policy communities. The Convening Week is hosted in Washington, DC, June 21–25.
• Winter Research Fellowship (EU Law): Details to follow.

Yes. We expect fellows to actively engage in discussions, collaborations, and presentations. For this reason, we require full professional fluency in both spoken and written English.

Yes. Practicing lawyers, law/policy researchers, and academics are encouraged to apply. We highly value relevant experience.

Subsidies are provided on a weekly basis, with rates varying by track and location.

• Summer Fellowship (US): $2,000 per week. Fellows who relocate to DC will receive a $10,000 relocation and housing stipend. The stipend is treated as taxable income, and no reimbursement or receipts are required.
• Summer Research Fellowship (Legal Frontiers): Fellows receive a weekly subsidy based on their location, comparable to our other tracks ($2,000 per week for Summer Research Fellows based in the US; and €1,000 per week for Summer Research Fellows based in the EU, and the equivalent for Summer Research Fellows based in the UK). Additional stipends are potentially available where conditions specific to each location are met.
• Winter Research Fellowship (EU Law): Details to follow.

Candidates with exceptional experience or qualifications may be eligible for higher subsidies.

Participants must have any visa or immigration permissions required to participate in the fellowship in the relevant country. If you receive an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to support relevant visa applications where appropriate. However, visa eligibility is ultimately determined by the relevant authorities.

Yes, you are welcome to submit applications for multiple tracks (US, EU Law, and/or Legal Frontiers), as long as you meet the qualifications for each one. You will need to submit a separate application for each track you are applying to.
