[Closed] Summer School on Law-Following AI
A two-day workshop for early-stage legal scholars and technologists interested in the question of how to design agentic AI systems that reliably follow the law
Overview
Hosted by the Institute for Law & AI (LawAI), the inaugural Summer School on Law-Following AI aims to provide an introduction to the design of agentic AI systems that follow human laws. You can read more about law-following AI in our research article.
The Summer School on Law-Following AI will feature informal presentations and seminar-style discussions focused on the fields of law and artificial intelligence. The aim of the event is to gather early-stage academics in an intimate setting to learn about and discuss with leading thinkers the concept of law-following AI and the emerging research agenda surrounding it, and to inspire participants to conduct further research in connection with these topics.
This event immediately precedes the separate Workshop on Law-Following AI 2026, which focuses on making progress on research questions related to law-following AI beyond the introductory approach in this Summer School. Please note that you will apply to one or both of these events using the same form, linked on this page.
Content
Designing AI agents to be law-following is likely to accelerate the safe deployment of AI in high-stakes domains while ensuring those gains do not come at the expense of legal accountability and public trust. This event focuses on introducing law-following AI and building an understanding of the key concepts supporting the proposal.
We will also begin to explore crucial questions in legal scholarship that must be resolved in order to design such systems. Examples of such questions include:
- Which laws should agentic AI systems follow?
- How rigorously should agentic AI systems follow those laws?
- How should a law-following AI system decide whether a contemplated action is likely to violate the law?
- In which contexts should the law require that AI agents be law-following?
A fuller list of research questions is listed in Part VI of our research article on law-following AI.
